Japan
A weaker Yen is hardly breaking news. Indeed, the Japanese currency has been losing ground for months now. Naturally, that hasn’t gone unnoticed by tourists, who have been flocking to the Land of the Rising Sun in record numbers. With that in mind, you might want to consider getting off the tourist trail to beat the crowds.
Canada
Just like its southern neighbour, Canada’s currency has been on the slide, falling seven per cent against sterling since last autumn. Getting there in the first place might prove cheaper next year too. The low-cost airline Westjet has been busy opening new routes, including Gatwick to St John, and Edinburgh to Halifax.
Barbados
If you’re looking for some affordable winter sun this season, then Barbados could be your best option. According to the Post Office’s annual Long Haul Holiday Report, Bridgetown has seen the steepest drop in costs of any major long-haul tourist destination, with prices down 18.5 per cent on this time last year.
Norway
Norway’s tumbling currency has puzzled economic experts, with one former government minister suggesting pegging the currency to the euro to fix the problem. Still, you can bet that monetary policy will be the last thing on your mind when you’re enjoying an affordable break to see those gorgeous fjords.
South Africa
Safari fans will be delighted to learn that sterling is currently enjoying its strongest performance against the South African rand since 2016. And there is more good news: the budget airline Norse, known for its cheap Transatlantic flights, is advertising return flights from Gatwick to Cape Town for just £769.
