Miller Publishing: Book can help to spread story

The “The Barbados-Carolina Connection”, will help to spread the story of the linkages between the Carolinas and Barbados. This is the belief of the persons behind the book.

Speaking at the media launch, recently at the George Washington House, Owner, Miller Publishing Company Limited, Keith Miller, said this is where the media comes in. “What we really need from the media is help to spread the story of the Barbados-Carolina connection, to tell as many people as possible this fascinating story which is seldom told. It is not known by many Barbadians and it is probably known by even fewer Americans. Therefore, it is a story that we would like to get out there because we believe that it has very positive implications, including real and genuine potential, to help promote both economic and social development in Barbados – and if I dare say it as well – similar benefits for the United States. That is why I wanted this to be the media launch. I wanted you guys to be the special guests, to give you the opportunity to be given a real, full understanding of what the story is about and what the implications are.”

Co-Author of the book, Senator Sir Henry Fraser agreed that it is a fascinating story that must be told. He said that his Co-Author on the book has also written a book entitled, “Caribbean Pirates” and one of the chapters was about Steve Bonnet whose story “is really a well kept secret.”

“In 1979, he and his wife moved into Upton Plantation which happens to be the birth place of this gentleman, which he found out from Ronnie Hughes. A few years later he was penning a book “Historic Houses of Barbados”, and through various connections, he was invited to go to Charleston as the architecture of the single houses there resembled the architecture of the houses in Barbados – since some of the settlers to that area were Barbadians. In addition, some of the proverbs that they use up there, plus the language, is similar in its grammar and idiom to the ones that are used in this island,” the Senator stated. “All of these things are the connections that were made from the settlement of Barbadians 350 years ago,” he said.

Counsellor, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the United States of America, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and the OECS, Laura Griesmer, said that the book is a reminder that the connections between the USA and Barbados extend beyond the 50 years of Independence that this island just marked.

Another linkage between the two nations is the George Washington House and upon discovering this place, she hopes to promote it to all of the visitors to Barbados with whom she comes into contact with.
