Nervous fliers will be glad to hear that there is no need to fly through the infamous Bermuda Triangle to reach the island from the UK – although that mystery may well have been solved at long last by scientific explanation in any case.
Getting around
Cars, scooters and bikes: Non-residents are not allowed to drive in Bermuda, so car hire is not possible for tourists. Driving is on the left, as in the UK, and the speed limit is 20mph (32kph).
Visitors can hire scooters or pedal bikes (as they are known on the island, to differentiate them from motorised versions). Elbow Beach Cycles (+1 441 296 2300; elbowbeachcycles.bm) has pedal bikes for hire from $23 (£17) for three hours or $30 (£23) for one day, including helmets and locks.

The company also hires out electric and petrol scooters from $37 and $29 respectively for three hours including helmets and locks.
Smatt’s Cycles (+1 441 295 1180; smattscyclelivery.com) is an alternative pedal bike and scooter hire company, with rates from $55 per 24 hours for either type, including helmets and locks.
You must be aged 18 or over in order to drive a scooter.
Buses: Pink-painted Bermuda buses operate along 11 routes covering the whole island. They are clean and air-conditioned. Bus stops with a pink pole have services heading towards the central terminal in the capital, Hamilton, and those with a blue pole are heading away from the city. Passengers must pay with the correct change in coins. Alternatively , bus and ferry tokens and passes can be bought in advance from transit terminals and hotels.
A full bus schedule can be accessed via the Bermuda Tourism Authority website (GoToBermuda.co.uk)
Ferries: There are four ferry routes around the island. Cash is not taken, so ensure you have a transportation pass, ticket or token before boarding.
Taxis: taxi drivers are often also very good tour guides, with thorough knowledge of island culture and landmarks. Taxis are metered at government-set rates: current fares are $7.90 for the first mile for 1-4 passengers and $2.75 each additional mile. Rates are higher for taxis that carry more than four passengers and also between 6:00 a.m. and midnight.
Taxis can be hailed from outside large hotels, near the airport or in the city of Hamilton. You can book via an app, hitch.bm. One of the main dispatching companies on the island is BTA Dispatching (btadispatching.com) (441-296-2121) which also takes online bookings.
