A Bermudian-produced film is set to screen this month in the heart of New York City.

Bull Street, produced by Bermudian Wendy Tucker Tannock, will come to the AMC Empire 25 cinema in Times Square on September 20.

Ms Tucker Tannock said: “As women filmmakers, we’re bringing perspectives to the screen that have been underrepresented for too long.

“We hope our work inspires more diverse storytelling in the industry.”

The film, which premiered earlier this year at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, follows the story of LouEster Gibbs, played by Malynda Hale, a small town personal injury lawyer, and her grandmother as they face eviction from their lifelong home.

Inspired by the true story of director Lynn Dow’s great-grandmother, the film delves into the complex history of land rights, generational wealth, greed and the lingering effects of racial injustice in America.

The film also sheds light on the infamous Bull Street mental institution in South Carolina, known for its controversial practices.

Ms Dow said: “We wanted to tell a deeply personal story that resonates universally.

“It’s about family, legacy, and standing up for what’s rightfully yours — themes that cross all boundaries.”

The cast includes Emmy award winner Loretta Devine from Crash and television shows such as Gray’s Anatomy, and Golden Globe winner Amy Madigan of Antlers and Roe v. Wade.

The film is scheduled to play at the AMC Empire 25 from September 20 to 26. For more information about the film, visit www.bullstreetmovie.com/where-to-watch.
