A message of hope for Spain and Hispanic America on Hispanicity Day

A message of hope for Spain and Hispanic America on Hispanicity Day

Change is possible: we must start believing and working together for it

Today is October 12. On this day, Hispanics celebrate the anniversary of a historic milestone: the Discovery of America in 1492.

Spain did not commit any genocide in America: what it did was to end one
Cultural genocide? This is how Spain helped to preserve the indigenous languages of America

For years, and on the occasion of this anniversary, I have been reviewing the history of that discovery and of the Spanish conquest and evangelization in America, a process that some want to bury under tons of lies, cultivating an anti-Spanish black legend that today serves, as in the past, very obvious political interests. Today, this black legend is being used to distract millions of Hispanics from paying attention to the abuses of bad politicians and tyrants like Nicolás Maduro.

However, today I want to make an exception and propose a look to the future with hope. In both Spain and Latin America we have the habit of lamenting our present and seeing tomorrow with pessimism and distrust. Suffering under tyrants and corrupt politicians on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean often leads us to view the future with fear. I often read messages from Hispanics around the world expressing the belief that our countries are beyond repair, as if what is happening to us were the result of a cultural defect from which no one can free us unless we renounce who we are, our cultural identity.

We must begin to banish this pessimistic vision. Spain and Hispanic America form a cultural community with enormous potential, and in fact a large part of this radical potential lies in the fact that we have a language and a culture that makes us feel closer to each other. The process of regeneration that Argentina is experiencing thanks to Javier Milei should serve as an example to all Hispanics. Many of us believed that this country had a difficult way out of its many problems due to the enormous damage caused by Peronist socialism. However, Argentina’s experience shows us that change is possible: what we must do is start to believe in it and work together for it.

On the other hand, the recent demonstrations in many Hispanic countries in support of Venezuelan democrats show that we are more than just a cultural community. We have the power to support each other in the face of adversity, unite against tyranny, and join forces to overthrow tyrants who seem immovable, but who are not, just as the communist dictatorships of Eastern Europe were not.

This is a message that our brothers in Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, and also in other countries that are falling down the slippery slope of socialism, should keep in mind. Socialist tyrants hate Spain because they know that millions of Spaniards support our American brothers who suffer from this scourge, because we do not react with indifference to misery and oppression, and because together we have the power to overthrow any tyrant.

Finally, I encourage you to avoid those who try to unite you in hatred and resentment towards other peoples. The problems of Spain and Latin America are not the fault of the “Anglos”, nor of the United States nor of NATO, but of our own politicians and of those who support them time and again regardless of the abuses they commit.

Some people want Hispanics to move away from democratic countries and move closer to dictatorships like Vladimir Putin’s, the terrorist regime in Iran and communist China, dictatorships that support tyrants who have plunged many Hispanics into misery and oppression. It is not these dictatorships that we Hispanics should support, but the Russians, Iranians and Chinese who fight against them and who dream of a future of freedom in their own countries. The same dream that millions of Hispanic brothers and sisters have today in countries like Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Let’s make that dream come true together.

¡Viva la Hispanidad!
