Oruro (Agenzia Fides) – The Departmental Federation of Mining Cooperatives of Oruro, along with the Bishop of the Diocese of Oruro, His Exc. Mgr. Krzysztof Bialasik Wawrowska, SVD, announced the formation of a Committee for Peace, that will try to promote groups contacts with the authorities and to avoid further conflict, as stated in the note sent to Fides from a local source.
The Committee is composed by Eduardo Berdeja, of the Poopó cooperative, Andrés Villva of the La Salvadora cooperative, and Isaac Meneses, of the Nuovo San Jose cooperative. They have the task of creating a similar reality at an national level. Berdeja, in the note explains that the decision to form this committee was taken following the alleged persecution of the leaders in this area.
Mgr. Bialasik expressed his intention to contribute to the achievement of peace and tranquility, after the conflict that killed four miners and Vice-Minister Rodolfo Illanes.
The Bishop of Oruro recalled the Church’s concern to permanently stop the violence that the country is experiencing (see Fides 29/08/2016), and concluded: “We know that violence begets violence and we must reach peace, sit down with the authorities at a round table and expose the problems”.
