El Alto (Agenzia Fides) – The La Paz Regional Academic Unit of the Bolivian Catholic University “San Pablo” has decided to name its headquarters in the city of El Alto, after “Mgr. Eugenio Scarpellini”. This important university study center was in fact, the result of a great project managed by the passion of the late Bishop and former National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
The El Alto Unit was inaugurated on January 30, 2020 with the training offer of 12 different programs in the administrative-financial area and in the engineering field.
Although face-to-face classes have been suspended since March due to the pandemic measures, the virtual modality has made it possible to follow the academic calendar.
On the other hand, in response to the health crisis, Bishops, priests and religious have mobilized during the strict quarantine to deliver food and other provisions to those most in need. Although biosafety protocols were followed, contagion among many collaborators of the Catholic Church of El Alto was inevitable. Thus Covid hit Bishop Scarpellini, who died on July 15.
Monsignor Eugenio Scarpellini left this world at the age of 66. As a priest he was part of the Bolivian clergy since 1988, having been appointed Auxiliary Bishop of El Alto in 2010. In 2013 Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of El Alto. In his Episcopate he was attentive to the needs of the people, at the service of the poorest and in constant movement to contribute to the development of the young city. In 2012 he was Secretary General of the Bolivian Episcopal Conference. In 2018 he organized the “V American Missionary Congress” which was held in Santa Cruz (see Fides, 16/7/2018). The contribution of the Bishop of El Alto in 2019 is significant, as the architect of the negotiations that allowed the restoration of social peace in Bolivia after the political crisis experienced in the country.
For all these reasons, the Bolivian Catholic University “San Pablo”, paying homage to the passionate commitment of the Bishop of the Diocese of El Alto, decided to name its structures “Monsignor Eugenio Scarpellini”, hoping that this gesture will keep in the memory of the city the memory of those who unconditionally served its inhabitants.
