La Paz (Agenzia Fides) – The Archdiocesan Council of the Laity of La Paz has expressed its concern at the acts of vandalism by violent groups which, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, generated a climate of confrontation, and asks the authorities to guarantee the rule of law.
According to information gathered by Agenzia Fides, during the demonstrations of March 8, groups of feminists smeared the facade of the church of Cochabamba, in Plaza Colón, with writings and graffiti against the Catholic Church and the police. They also threw red paint on the facade of the Ministry of Justice and on the doors of the María Auxiliadora church, on paseo de El Prado, in La Paz.
The statement by the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity of La Paz expresses “enormous concern at the vandalism of small violent groups which, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, generated a climate of intolerance and confrontation, violating the rights of both parties, with actions that contradict the peaceful attitude that has always characterized our people”. Recalling that “human rights have their limits when the rights of others are violated”, and that this guiding principle of peaceful coexistence “is increasingly deteriorated and relativized”, they reiterate: “We are a different society, with different thoughts that constitute a plurality, in search of a healthy and constructive coexistence. The attitude that we adopt as believers, respectful of the dignity and rights of people, will always be peaceful”. The statement, signed by the President of the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity of La Paz, Juan Carlo Núñez, concludes by asking the representatives of the Bolivian State “to assume their responsibility to guarantee full respect for the rule of law, in protecting the integrity of citizens, of the cultural and religious heritage, in compliance with the political Constitution of the State and the laws in force”.
