Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, just dropped the 27-player squad list for the upcoming October World Cup qualifiers, and guess who’s back?
None other than Lionel Messi! After missing a few matches due to injury, Messi’s return is the big news everyone’s buzzing about.

Right now, Argentina’s sitting pretty at the top of the CONMEBOL standings with 18 points from eight games.
They crushed Chile 3-0 but took a tough 2-1 loss to Colombia in the last round. Next up, La Albiceleste heads to face Venezuela (who’s sixth) on October 10 and will host Bolivia (currently eighth) on October 15.
Quick reminder: The top six teams from South America qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup. The seventh-placed team gets one more shot through a playoff.
This is Messi’s first return to international play since he injured his ankle in the Copa América final against Colombia back in July. Now he’s back in action and ready to help lead Argentina on the road to the World Cup!
