The U.S. men’s national soccer team kicks off what it hopes will be a highly successful Copa America on Sunday when it faces Bolivia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The USMNT is fixated on building an abundance of momentum for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Reaching the semifinals also would require a win over Brazil or Colombia, which is no small task. Argentina, the reigning World Cup and Copa America champions, are the No. 1-ranked team in the latest FIFA world rankings. Brazil (No. 4) joins rival Argentina in the top five, and is followed by Copa America 2024 teams such as the U.S. (11), Colombia (12, tied with Morocco), Uruguay (14) and Mexico (15). Bolivia, the USMNT’s opponent on Sunday, is ranked at No. 84.
Getting a victory against Bolivia will be vital to the USMNT’s chances in Copa America 2024. The U.S. is joined in Group C by pesky Concacaf adversary Panama and CONMEBOL powerhouse Uruguay, which currently is sitting second in CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying.
The USMSNT has faced Bolivia eight times before, with the all-time series is knotted at 2-2-4. The USMNT, however, prevailed in the most recent meeting in May 2018, a 3-0 triumph in which the then-18-year-olds Josh Sargent and Tim Weah scored their first USMNT goals.
