Houston: Brazil started their Copa America campaign with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Costa Rica, while Colombia kicked off their tournament with a 2-1 victory over Paraguay, propelled by a masterful performance from James Rodriguez.
In their Group D opener at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Brazil, aiming for a record 10th Copa America title, struggled to convert dominance into goals against a resilient Costa Rican defense. The Brazilians appeared to take the lead in the 30th minute through Marquinhos, but VAR intervened, disallowing the goal for a marginal offside after Raphinha’s free-kick and Rodrygo’s flick-on.
Despite enjoying 73.5% possession, Brazil managed just three shots on target, unable to breach Costa Rica’s well-organized defense. The Costa Ricans, content to defend deep, did not muster a single shot on goal throughout the match, frustrating Brazil’s attacking efforts.
Brazilian coach Dorival Junior acknowledged Costa Rica’s defensive prowess, praising their organization and dedication throughout the game.
Meanwhile, Colombia impressed in their opening match at Houston’s NRG Stadium, securing a deserved 2-1 victory over Paraguay. James Rodriguez, despite limited club playing time recently, showcased his class by assisting both Colombian goals. In the 32nd minute, Rodriguez delivered a precise cross to Daniel Munoz, who headed home to give Colombia the lead. Ten minutes later, Rodriguez’s free-kick from the opposite flank was nodded in by Jefferson Lerma, doubling Colombia’s advantage before halftime.
Although Paraguay pulled one back through Julio Enciso in the 69th minute, Colombia maintained control and created more scoring opportunities. They thought they had a chance to extend their lead from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, but VAR overturned the decision after reviewing Yerry Mina’s alleged foul.
Colombia’s victory extends their unbeaten streak to 24 games and puts them atop Group D. They will face Costa Rica in their next match on Friday, followed by a crucial encounter against Brazil on July 2 to conclude their group stage campaign.
Overall, Brazil’s disappointment in failing to convert dominance into goals contrasts with Colombia’s confident start, buoyed by James Rodriguez’s influential display, setting the stage for an intriguing progression in the Copa America group stage. AFP
