Brazil have begun their 2024 Copa America with a stalemate as they were held to a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica in Group D.
Selecao were utterly dominant throughout the match and they can feel a slight sense of injustice as the first half could have shaped the game completely differently, had they not had a goal chalked off by VAR for offside.
There was also a huge penalty shout waved away by the referee for a handball in the box which saw Vinicius Jr and Marquinhos approach the referee at the break in protest. Dorival Junior’s men had 75% possession and nine shots, while Costa Rica failed to record an attempt.
In the second half, it was more of the same as Brazil continued to play the ball around in the final third but with little reward. They came closest through West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta who hit a rocket from distance but was denied by the post.
Costa Rica’s game plan was brilliantly executed as they showed resilience in defence and had nearly all 11 players camped in their own half for the majority of the match.
They came into the game as huge underdogs and stole a point from one of the tournament’s favorites.

45 mins: There have been four minutes added to the first half.
40 mins: Brazil are surrounding the referee as they think they deserve a penalty but the referee fails to bow down to their demands and the corner is wasted.
33 mins: GOAL RULED OUT! After a lengthy check, VAR deemed an offside was in the build-up.
30 mins: GOALLLL! Marquinhos taps home at the far post and Brazil’s tournament is off to the perfect start. He looked slightly offside but VAR will check it.
