45 mins: There have been four minutes added to the first half. 

40 mins: Brazil are surrounding the referee as they think they deserve a penalty but the referee fails to bow down to their demands and the corner is wasted. 

33 mins: GOAL RULED OUT! After a lengthy check, VAR deemed an offside was in the build-up.

30 mins: GOALLLL! Marquinhos taps home at the far post and Brazil’s tournament is off to the perfect start. He looked slightly offside but VAR will check it.

26 mins: It’s the West Ham man again who has a strike from distance but Paqueta can’t hit the target. 

24 mins: Huge chance for Brazil as Raphinha is one on one with the goalkeeper but again the Costa Rica man denies him.

22 mins: Paqueta attempts a strike first time but scuffs the effort and it goes wide. 

15 mins: Danilo’s cross is deflected and almost loops over the goalkeeper but it’s gone out for a corner. Raphinha takes but Costa Rica clear the danger.

10 mins: Vini is has space and attempts to pick out Rodrygo in the box but it’s swept away. Brazil are using these flanks well so far.

6 min: First chance for Brazil comes as Raphinha finds space down the right and dribbles into the box but Sequeira blocks the cross-cum-shot.

The big absentee for Brazil at this tournament is Neymar, who has not recovered sufficiently from a serious ankle injury. However, they will also be missing experienced midfielder Casemiro, who was overlooked for the squad, and goalkeeper Ederson, who sustained a fractured eye socket in Manchester City’s win over Tottenham last month.
