Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) scrambles away from Green Bay Packers linebacker Justin Hollins (47) during the third quarter at Lincoln Financial Field on Nov. 27, 2022.
But first, the two teams will have to get there. For the Eagles, that means a 9 1/2 hour flight from Philadelphia to Sao Paulo, leaving Wednesday morning and arriving that night.
Jordan Mailata, who’s from Australia about a 15-18 hour flight, said that’s “a walk in the park” to him.
“They tell you, ‘You need to stay awake,'” Mailata said about the Eagles’ athletic trainers. “And I’m like, ‘Of course! I’m going to be awake for 9 hours. You kidding me?’ This is a short flight (comparatively). I’m going to download a lot of movies, bring a deck of cards, and you gotta be chatty.
“I talk to everybody. I’ll stand by the galley and just stand there and chat. I can’t be sitting down the whole time, and I can’t stand here like a (expletive) statue, pardon my language. But I’m very friendly about it.”
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said that’s the emphasis on the flight, moving around as much as possible.
“We’ve already talked about our plan of what the flight’s going to look like, and what the post-flight’s going to look like with IVs and things like that, because a flight like that can dehydrate you,” Sirianni said. “But that’s our job … Now control what you can control − fluids getting in your body, the IVs, the stretching. All the things that we’re going to do to make sure we’re ready to go physically for this game.”
Of course, once the teams arrive, it’s all about the game. That’s how Hurts sees it.
He knows this a big season for him, just as the Packers feel the same way about Love.
Hurts was the runner up to MVP Patrick Mahomes in 2022, when Hurts led the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Hurts wasn’t as good last season, but the Eagles signed running back Saquon Barkley and hired Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator.
The Eagles installed a new offense under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. The Eagles have kept that under wraps throughout the summer.
So the game in Brazil will serve as the unveiling.
“It doesn’t really matter what everybody else thinks that we’re going to do,” Hurts said. “It’s about the preparation that we put in, and ultimately find ways to succeed on the field. We gotta group of guys that put a lot of work in, that are dedicated and spent a lot of time over the summer building up to this point.
“And so, we prepared. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’ve all committed to what we’re trying to do. It’s all about carrying it out.”
Love, meanwhile, sat behind Aaron Rodgers for his first three seasons before becoming a full-time starter this season. Love led the Packers to a playoff berth last season.
And now, they both have a painting of themselves on the side of a building.
