Luiz Henrique the hero for Brazil; Venezuela fight back to draw Argentina

The CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers continued Thursday evening with four more games around South America. Here is what went down

Chile 1-2 Brazil

Scorers: Vargras 2′ ; Jesus 45+1′, Henrique 89′

A pair of lesser-heralded strikers from Botafogo came up huge for Brazil as they snatched a late win in Chile to potentially turn their qualifying campaign around.

It was a horror start for a Brazil team that came into the night desperately needed a result some positive vibes, as Eduardo Vargas fired Chile into the lead inside two minutes to stun the visitors.

As has been the case throughout most of their qualifying campaign, Brazil responded with plenty of chances but struggled to carve out any major scoring opportunities, until the dying seconds of the half when a youngster made a major impact.

Botafogo man Igor Jesus was a surprise starter in the centre-forward role for Brazil, but he made a huge impact before the break when he flicked a header into the bottom corner after getting on the end of a Savio cross.

While it looked like the game would fizzle out with the points shared, another unlikely hero emerged for Brazil when Luiz Henrique came off the bench to fire home the winner in the dying minutes and ensure Brazil moved into the top-six with a huge three points.

Venezuela 1-1 Argentina

Scorers: Rondón 65′ ; Otamendi 13′

Venezuela fought back to earn a home draw against world champions Argentina on a waterlogged pitch in Monagas.

The game was delayed some time due to the water on the pitch, and while it eventually got underway in front of a packed house, the ball could hardly move through the puddles that soaked the grass.

Nonetheless, the visitors took the lead through the unlikely source of Nicolás Otamendi, who popped up from defence to head home the opener. Venezuela responded well, however.

The home side perhaps should have found the leveller before the half-time break but Messi and his mates were bailed out by a combination of poor finishing and some heroic defending at the back.

Parity was finally rekindled, perhaps deservedly so, when Yeferson Soteldo picked out Salomón Rondón with a pinpoint cross and the veteran striker headed in from close range with aplomb.

The draw sees Argentina remain top of the table for now, while Venezuela move into the top-six, one point clear of Brazil.
