The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Pedro Vaca, stated on Wednesday (12) that Brazil’s invitation to his delegation demonstrates to the world the country’s strong democratic foundations.
Amid pressure from Bolsonaro supporters urging the international body to reprimand the Brazilian judiciary, Vaca also called on Brazilian society for “a calm conversation” that “can contribute to the public debate in Brazil.”
“I am here at the invitation of the Brazilian state, and this, in the eyes of the international community, demonstrates an openness to international observation, which we see as a sign of strong democracy and a significant contribution to regional dialogue,” he said.
The statement was made during a meeting between Vaca and government-aligned lawmakers who participated in the January 8th inquiry commission, including its rapporteur, Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA). The meeting was divided into two parts: one public and one private.
Vaca has a packed agenda in Brazil. The day before, he met with allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and with the family of the man imprisoned for the January 8th attack who died at the Papuda Penitentiary in Brasília.
On Monday (10), he held a meeting with members of the Federal Police, from whom he received a copy of the draft coup plan prepared by Bolsonaro supporters in 2022. That same day, he also visited the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for a conversation with its president, Luís Roberto Barroso, and Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
