Quality of Brazil's Beaches at Worst Level Ever Recorded - 23/12/2024 - Science and Health

A ranking compiled by Folha since 2016 shows that the quality of water for beachgoers in Brazil’s beaches is at its worst level in the historical series.

The survey serves as a warning for tourists wanting to enjoy the summer on the coast.

The analysis of water quality in 861 beaches reveals that only 258 of them had suitable water in measurements taken throughout 2024.

Nine years ago, when the study began in 14 states, 44% of the same beaches were suitable for swimming, compared to just 30% now.

Among the worst-rated spots are popular destinations such as Morro de São Paulo (Bahia) and parts of Leblon (Rio de Janeiro).
