CLEVELAND, Ohio – The U.S. men’s basketball team defeated Brazil 122-87 in the Paris Olympic quarterfinals Tuesday and will go head-to-head in the semifinals against Serbia, which USA defeated the Americans 110-84 on July 28.
Kevin Durant broke retired WNBA player Lisa Leslie’s record as U.S. basketball’s all-time Olympic scorer, male or female. Leslie retired in 2009 with 488 total career points in four Olympics. She held onto the record for nearly two decades.
Durant ended the game with 11 points, pushing him to 494. Durant has won three Olympic gold medals and is hoping to win a fourth, previously earning a gold at 2012 London, 2016 Rio De Janeiro, and 2020 Tokyo.
If the U.S. wins the gold, at 35 years old Durant will be the only player in U.S. basketball history to have won four Olympic gold medals.
“That’s Captain America status,” Durant’s teammate, Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns, told reporters after the game.
“I feel like he has every record, every Olympic record, now we have to get him his fourth gold.”
“Records are meant to be broken,” Durant said after the game. “Somebody will come along and do the same. I’m focused on trying to win this gold.”
The United States will face Serbia in the semifinals Thursday at 3 p.m. EDT.
