Las Vegas: Vinícius Junior showcased his prowess with a brace in the first half to propel Brazil to a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, positioning themselves strongly in Group D of the Copa America.
The match saw Brazil assert their dominance early on, with Vinícius Junior opening the scoring with two well-taken goals before Savinho added a third just before halftime. The Seleção Canarinhos attacking prowess was on full display, overwhelming Paraguay and asserting control of the game.
Despite a spirited effort from Paraguay, highlighted by Omar Alderete’s goal early in the second half, Brazil maintained their composure. Lucas Paqueta sealed the victory with a penalty kick, making amends for an earlier miss, ensuring Brazil’s commanding lead.
The encounter was not without drama, as tensions ran high with multiple yellow cards issued throughout the game. Paraguay’s Andres Cubas received a red card in the 81st minute, reducing them to ten men for the remainder of the match. This pivotal moment further tilted the balance in Brazil’s favour, allowing them to consolidate their dominance on the field.
The victory was a significant response from Brazil following their opening match draw against Costa Rica. With four points from two matches, Brazil now sits just two points behind group leaders Colombia. A positive result in their upcoming clash against Colombia will secure Brazil’s spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Historically, Brazil has faced challenges against Paraguay in Copa America competitions, often encountering drawn matches. However, their recent victories, including a decisive 4-0 win in World Cup qualifying two years prior, underscored their determination and capability in crucial encounters.
Under the guidance of coach Dorival Júnior, Brazil’s tactical decisions paid dividends. Despite opting not to start Raphinha, a move that raised eyebrows, the team delivered a cohesive performance. Vinícius Junior’s standout performance, alongside contributions from Savinho and Paqueta, highlighted Brazil’s depth and versatility in attack.
As the tournament progresses, Brazil remains a formidable contender for the Copa America title, buoyed by their strong showing against Paraguay. With Vinícius Junior leading the charge, Brazil’s prospects look promising as they aim to add another Copa America title to their illustrious history.
Colombia vs Costa Rica
Colombia marched into the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Friday with a confident 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in Arizona.
Goals from Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez and Jhon Cordoba sealed all three points for the Colombians, who are now guaranteed a top-two finish in Group D.
Colombia will qualify for the quarter-finals as group winners if they can secure at least a point against Brazil — a 4-1 winner over Paraguay in Friday’s other Copa contest — in their final group game next Tuesday. Agencies
