The Philadelphia Eagles are hitting the road for a home game.

If seems a little off, it isn’t.

The Eagles are opening the 2024 season with a home game on Friday, Sept. 6, in São Paulo, Brazil. It will be the first NFL game in South America.

While there will be watch parties and events around Philadelphia, fans are left to wonder why the Eagles are playing their first home game 4,754 miles away from home.

Who are the Eagles playing in Brazil?

The Eagles will face the Green Bay Packers.

When is kickoff?

The game kicks off at 8:15 p.m.

Where is the game?

The game is at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil.

Why are the Eagles playing in Brazil?

The cynical fan would say money. However, the NFL is just trying to expand the popularity of American football.

The NFL is using games in England, Germany, Mexico and Brazil to expand the reach and popularity of the NFL around the world. According to NFL.com, growing the league globally at every level is a strategic priority for the National Football League.

“As global growth continues to be a critical and strategic priority for the NFL and its 32 clubs, we are thrilled to have the Green Bay Packers playing against the Philadelphia Eagles in our first-ever game in South America,” said Managing Director and Head of NFL International Gerrit Meier in a press release last April. “With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular-season opener in São Paulo will bring an incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally.”

Of course, if fans around the world buy a T-shirt, jersey or cap, NFL owners won’t mind.

How long have NFL games been played internationally?

This is the first NFL game in Brazil, but the NFL has played games in other countries since the 1950s.

The first NFL team to play outside the United States was the New York Giants, who faced the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League in an exhibition game. The Giants won 27-6.

The Eagles were scheduled to play the first NFL exhibition game in Mexico in 1968, but the Aug. 11 game against the Cleveland Browns was canceled.

The first NFL exhibition game outside of North America was the Mainichi Star Bowl in Tokyo between the then-St. Louis Cardinals and then-San Diego Chargers. The Cardinals won 20-10.

In 1988, 10 years after the first game in Mexico was canceled, the Eagles and New Orleans Saints played the first exhibition game in Mexico. The Saints won 14-7.

NFL football went across the pond to the United Kingdom for the first time when the Minnesota Vikings defeated the then-St. Louis Cardinals 28-10 in an exhibition game in 1983.

Along with continued games in England, Mexico and Japan, the NFL continued moving around the globe with a 1988 exhibition game in Sweden (Minnesota Vikings vs. Chicago Bears), a 1990 exhibition game in West Germany (Los Angeles Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs), a 1993 exhibition game in Spain (Pittsburgh Steelers vs. San Francisco 49ers), a 1997 exhibition game in Ireland (Pittsburgh vs. Chicago) and a 1999 exhibition game in Australia (Denver Broncos vs. San Diego Chargers)

When was the first NFL regular season international game?

The first NFL regular season game played in a foreign country was on Oct. 2, 2005, when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The first regular season NFL game played outside of North America was on Oct. 28, 2007, when the New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium in London.

How many times have the Eagles played an international game?

The Eagles have played five international games – four exhibition games and one regular-season game. Here are the results:

Exhibition games1978: New Orleans Saints 14, Philadelphia Eagles 7, in Mexico City1989: Philadelphia Eagles 17, Cleveland Browns 13, in London1991: Buffalo Bills 17, Philadelphia Eagles 13, in London1993: New Orleans Saints 28, Philadelphia Eagles 16, in TokyoRegular season2018: Philadelphia Eagles 24, Jacksonville Jaguars 18, in London
