V.I.’s largest bike race set for Sunday on STX | Sports

V.I.’s largest bike race set for Sunday morning on St. Croix

The Virgin Islands Cycling Federation will hold the territory’s largest bike race Sunday morning on St. Croix with the running of the second annual America’s Paradise Challenge.

The Challenge will have races of varying lengths in seven different divisions, with the start and finish at the D.C. Canegata Recreation Complex in Christiansted, near Gallows Bay. The first races are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.

Cyclists from St. Thomas, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and even Guadeloupe are expected to compete in this year’s Challenge, which will have prizes totaling $15,000.

The entry fee is $50 for non-VICF members, $35 for VICF members and $10 for juniors.

Pre-registration will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Leatherback Brewing Co., 9902 Industrial Park in Kingshill. Race-day registration will be held at the Recreation Complex on Sunday between 6 a.m. and 6:45 a.m.

Signups open for West Side mixed doubles tourney

Registration has begun for the West Side Tennis Club’s mixed doubles open tournament in late October on St. Thomas.

The tournament will be played Oct. 25-28 at the Doris E. Hodge Tennis Courts in Subbase, St. Thomas.

Doubles teams with adult and junior players are invited to enter. The registration fee is $30 for West Side Tennis Club members and $35 for nonmembers.

Zero Tolerance Back to School tourney this week

The Zero Tolerance Basketball Organization will hold its annual Back to School tournament this weekend on St. Thomas.

The tournament is scheduled for Friday through Sunday at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School’s Audi Henneman Gymnasium.

The tournament will have four entries each in the 9-12 and 13-15 age groups playing a round-robin format in each division, with the two best teams in each age group playing for the title.

USVISF to hold assistant referee workshop Saturday

The U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Federation will hold an assistant referee workshop this weekend on St. Croix.

The workshop is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the USVISF’s Bethlehem Soccer Complex.

The workshop will cover the duties and responsibilities of being an assistant referee in soccer.
