Currently, Virgin Atlantic operates five A330-900s, serving popular routes including New York, Boston, and Miami. An additional three aircraft are scheduled for delivery later this year, with four more expected by the end of 2026.
As part of its fleet modernisation strategy, Virgin Atlantic plans to gradually phase out its A330-300s starting September 2024.
These aircraft, which joined the fleet in 2011, will be replaced by the new A330-900s.
The newer models boast a 13% improvement in fuel and carbon efficiency, aligning with the airline’s commitment to sustainability.
Shai Weiss, CEO, Virgin Atlantic, says: “Flying the youngest fleet is the most readily available and significant lever towards decarbonising long-haul aviation and we are proud to operate one of the youngest and most fuel and carbon efficient fleets across the Atlantic.
“Our special partnership with Airbus began with the arrival of ‘Lady in Red’ in 1993, with our most recent arrival, ‘Ruby Rebel’, arriving to mark our 40th birthday this year. Virgin Atlantic has flown more than 60 Airbus tails in the last three decades. While not first to the party, they’ve been our main dance partner, making our customers smile ever since.”
By 2028, Virgin Atlantic aims to operate a diverse fleet of 45 next-generation aircraft, comprising 19 A330-900s, 12 A350-1000s, and 14 787-9s.
This strategy is projected to reduce the average age of the fleet to just 6.4 years, ensuring customers benefit from the latest aviation technology and comfort features.
In a parallel move, the airline has secured long-term lease extensions with AerCap for seven Boeing 787-9s.
These aircraft will continue to serve various routes, including destinations in the Caribbean, North America, and India, as well as new routes to the Maldives and Bengaluru, India.
