The Brookings Wildlife Federation will host Terry Wieczorek at its Aug. 2 infolunch at the Outdoor Adventure Center, 2810 22nd Ave. S.

Wieczorek will show pictures and talk about his trip to Argentina to hunt various kinds of game birds.

Wieczorek, a longtime board member of the federation, will present a program on his travel, the area of Argentina that he visited, the variety of game he hunted, South American food and hospitality, capybaras (100-lb rodent), armadillos, and duck-retrieving hogs.

In May, Wieczorek — along with three friends — traveled for 20-plus hours by air and ground to arrive in Argentina’s Southwest Buenos Aires Province for a mixed bag duck hunt. Along with ducks, other game included Magellan and Ashey Headed geese, doves, perdiz and pigeons.

The hunts were both in wetlands and uplands. The upland hunt was for perdiz, which are a partridge and the hunt is much like hunting pheasants. Perdiz inhabit short grass, and they tend to run before flushing. They rarely hold while the dog is on point.

The Magellan goose is a striking black and white striped goose (male) that weighs about 6 pounds (size of our small Canada goose). It is called an upland goose because it lives on pastures and grasslands with short green grasses. It is an upland nester, but the young use wetlands.

For their wetland hunts, Wieczorek and his buddies set out duck and goose decoys in wetlands in the morning. There were indigenous waterfowl, like the Magellan goose, but also birds that were more familiar to South Dakota hunters, like the pintail.

Wieczorek has hunted from the top of the world to the bottom. In February 2023, he told the federation about his trip to Cold Bay, Alaska, for a goose, duck, and ptarmigan hunt where he saw Pacific Black Brant, Emperor Geese, Cackling Canada Geese, and several species of ducks.

The BWF is affiliated with the South Dakota Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation. The BWF is in its 43rd year of supplying conservation information and activities to the Brookings community. For more information, contact BWF President Bob Kurtz at 605-695-1361.
