Cirium’s latest year-end performance report showed WestJet was the worst of North America’s 10 major airlines in getting travellers to their place of choice on time in 2024 (see rankings below). The Canadian carrier ran behind schedule on nearly 30 per cent of its 192,084 flights last year.
Air Canada, which placed No. 10 in 2023 (WestJet was No. 7), was just ahead of WestJet in ninth spot in 2024. It landed 71.36 per cent of its 385,703 2024 flights on schedule last year, the numbers show. That means nearly 28.5 per cent of its flights were deemed late in arriving.
While Cirium says it tracks monthly and annual on-time performance numbers for some 20 airlines in Canada and the U.S., an official with the company told INsauga.com it reports only on the top 10.
By comparison in January, Denver-based Frontier Airlines was eighth on the list (73.1 per cent of its 15,376 flights were on time), Long Island, N.Y.-based JetBlue was seventh (75.04 per cent of 23,250 flights) and American Airlines was sixth (80.69 per cent of 170,699 flights).

Topping the January list was Southwest Airlines in the U.S. (83.3 per cent of 103,223 flights) followed by Alaska Airlines (82.59 per cent of 32,861 flights) in second spot and Florida-based Spirit Airlines in third (81.13 per cent of 19,063 flights).
Delta Air Lines in the U.S., which normally sits atop the monthly and yearly rankings, fell to fourth in January, landing 81.06 per cent of its 132,099 flights on time. United Airlines was fifth (80.74 per cent of 129,350 flights).
Of 670,570 total flights in January operated by the 10 largest airlines in Canada and the U.S. combined, 77.94 per cent arrived on time upon completion of their journey, the numbers show.
For purposes of Cirium’s data collection, only U.S. and Canadian carriers are included in North American numbers. Mexico’s Aeromexico is included in monthly and year-end Latin American rankings despite Mexico being one of the three countries that comprise North America.
Each month, Cirium ranks the 10 largest airlines in a given region around the world based on their on-time performance rate. Regions where numbers are tracked, in addition to North America and Latin America, are Asia Pacific, Europe, and Middle East and Africa.
