India Canada relations are at their worst possible point in history. The contrains between the two countries started with with the murder of a Canadian national and pro Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.
On Monday, October 14, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that “India was possibly if not probably, behind Nijjar’s killing. He further said that India had made a monumental mistake by supporting criminal acts.
India announced the withdrawal of its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats from Canada, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions.
This decision follows a summons of the Canadian Charge d’Affaires, during which Indian officials expressed deep concerns about the “baseless targeting” of Indian diplomats. Hours later, the Indian government also ordered the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats. Canada, too, retaliated by expelling six Indian diplomats after police gathered evidence.
