A new study by the Fraser Institute shows that Canadian incomes are falling behind those of our neighbours to the south.
The latest survey shows that between 2010 and 2022, only British Columbia was in the top half of earnings growth, with a $7,732 increase per person, yet it ranked 19th overall for the value of the increase.
Newfoundland and Labrador is among the lowest in earnings growth, ranking 47 among the 60 Canadian provinces and US states surveyed, with earnings growth of $4,850—but NL was higher than Ontario, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Alberta, which ranked last.
According to the Fraser Institute, median employment earnings in all ten provinces trailed median incomes in every US state. The median income in Newfoundland and Labrador is $32,713, ranking fourth-to-last among the ten provinces. Alberta had the highest median income at $38,969.
The think tank says Canadians should want to know why workers in states like Mississippi and Louisiana make more money than workers here at home.
