HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Camacho is a band from Decatur, Alabama and it is made up of Joe Canada as vocalist/keyboardist, Andrew “AC” Segler as guitarist, Alex Powell as drummer, Heath Brister as bassist and Mac Macdonald as guitarist.

“A.C. and I rode the bus together from 1st-3rd grade and have always bonded over music, and the three of us (including Alex) went to high school together, and attended local shows at Excalibur & Planet Avalon in our hometown of Decatur, AL.” – Joe Canada

Even though Camacho is pretty much all over the place genre-wise, Canada listed bands reflected in the group’s sound.

“I would say the Beatles taught me what I know, in terms of lyrics and chord progression. But there is heavy influences of Smashing Pumpkins, Queen, Pink Floyd with a little bit of Against Me!, Green Day & My Chemical Romance. We just love all music, mainly Rock, and love to be progressive. Hardly any of our songs sound the same.”

Fun fact: Camacho’s name is a nod to the character of President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho played by Terry Crews in “Idiocracy.”

Name of record/artist?

Joe: Wings Over America by Paul McCartney & Wings (1976)

What emotion does this record invoke for you?

Joe: Happiness and pure joy. The excitement that was in those arenas is hard to comprehend in this day- It had only been 6 years since The Beatles broke up, and it was most audience’s first time ever seeing Paul in the flesh.

What is your favorite instrumental part of this album?

Joe: I’d have to pick Linda McCartney’s synth solo in “Jet”- sure there are much better keyboard solos, even better solos throughout the 3-record set; but I’m never in a bad mood listening to it. It just makes me so happy. Been listening to this album for years and it still hits me every time.

Does this record bring back any memories for you?

Joe: In Aug 2009, my mother, sister and I camped out overnight to make the front rail for Paul at the “Green Concert” at Piedmont Park, Atlanta, GA- it was a tough day, but we made it to the rail right in the middle of the stage-Happiest 2 1/2 hours of my life.

What are the highlight tracks?

Joe: “Venus & Mars/Rockshow/Jet”- Hell of a way to start an arena rock show. “The Long and Winding Road”- an incredible version, and Paul’s voice was in top form at the time and he knew it, too. “Magneto & Titanium Man”- a goofy song based on a comic book, full of the classic whimsical Paul-isms and silliness; something some Beatle fans can laugh off and joke about but it’s come to be my favorite type of McCartney tune- when it’s not so serious, especially comparing to songs his former bandmates were coming up with at the time.

Describe the album artwork

Joe: It’s actually a very cool and memorable cover: The side of an airplane with the cabin doors slightly open with only a bright wight light shining inside, with the album title above.

RAPID WORD ASSOCIATION – What is the FIRST word that comes to your head

Joe: Exciting.

Why should WE listen to this record?

Joe: It’s one of the greatest artists of all time along with late legends Denny Laine & Linda McCartney giving life to crowds with truly electrifying and passionate performances, as he still does today. You can hear him having a blast doing what he does best.

Although Wings was highly popular band with massive hits/influence, people weren’t ready for Paul to move on from the past. In my opinion it didn’t matter what he did next; comparing it to his former band would always be a bad idea. I think people should give Wings a shot because they have influenced me arguably just as much as The Beatles have.

Camacho’s next show will be at The Camp on Friday, October 18th with Drop Diver and Superhighway.
