Seven teams across America and Canada compete in “Drums on the Ohio”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — As a time-honored tradition, Drums on the Ohio returns to the Reitz Bowl Saturday evening.

It’s a marching band and drum corps competition from Drums Corps International bringing together groups from all corners of the country.

Performers come to Evansville from Ohio, California, New Hampshire and Quebec.

Some of the them tell us they’re in Evansville for a bigger reason than just winning the tournament.

For one night, Evansville is home to some of the nation’s most talented marching ensembles.

Seven drum corps show off their routines in front of fans.

“It’s so cool to see students that I teach,” FJ Reitz Band Director Alex Grimm says. “They grow up and get to do things like this.”

The groups have practiced for months ahead of this summer tour.

Musicians and performers are giving up countless hours to practice, including the Columbus Saints from Columbus, Ohio and Les Stentors from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

“A lot of these corps you’ll see tonight — we’ll have a lot of really good shows and a lot of experience out there,” Columbus Saint John Bixler says.

“Tonight, specifically, I’m looking for fun. That’s what drum corps is for me,” says Stentor Marilys Rousseau.

With so much talent on display, some are likely to take what they see and help their ensemble.

“They’ve been through what we’ve been through, and they’re added things on after that and they have some information that they can give to us to be better here,” says FJ Reitz Drum Major Collin Goebel.

Though Evansville is home to competition, some musicians are in town to put smiles on faces.

“It’s just making people happy. Music is our passion, and our whole goal here is to give entertainment and happiness and joy to everybody,” says Columbus Saint Nicholas Curran.

We’re here to make people smile because it’s our passion, and we want to share it with everyone,” says Rousseau.

The 2024 summer tour comes to a close next week.

Some of the musicians and performers will head to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to compete in this year’s DCI World Championships. It kicks off Thursday, August 8.
