Dr. Jasmeet Bains, a physician and the first Sikh American elected to the California assembly, has been subjected to escalating threats after she spearheaded a resolution declaring the 1984 killing of thousands of Sikhs in India a genocide. Four men confronted Bains at her office, warning they would ‘go after’ her. Since then, over 100 threatening messages have targeted Bains, who also observed her home being surveilled.
Bains alerted local police and the state assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms about the threats. Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement on Indian government involvement in a Sikh leader’s assassination, the FBI contacted Bains about her case. The heightened danger forced Bains to increase her security measures.
Sikh community leaders across North America report similar threats and harassment. Many believe the intimidation tactics could be linked to Indian government actions. Incidents include online harassment, doxxing, and false police reports. The FBI warned the community about ‘transnational repression,’ urging vigilance and reporting of threats, as investigations continue in both the U.S. and Canada.
