What makes a city cool? Is it the culture, the food, the nightlife, the environmental sustainability? According to the site Canada Sports Betting, which recently issued a report ranking the 25 coolest cities in the U.S. and Canada, it’s all that—and more.
To identify the coolest cities for 2024, the site analyzed 50 of the largest cities in the U.S. and Canada using eight overarching categories–from lifestyle and recreation to media coverage. The editors of the report then drilled into 19 metrics, which were weighted and rated based on a 100-point scale. The metrics included obvious cool factors: the number of breweries in the city, the number of Instagram posts with the hashtag of the city mentioned. And then there were some that were less obvious—but totally cool—from the percentage of the city’s population who volunteered in 2023 to the current number of startups in the city.
Taking the crown as the coolest city in the U.S. and Canada is New York City, with a score of 72.68 out of 100. “New York City gained its place at the top of the rankings due to its global influence, being the number one most Instagrammed city on the list, due to its iconic skyline and impressive number of historical landmarks (803),” wrote the authors of the report. Some of the other factors that propelled the Big Apple to the top: It’s the most innovative city, it’s a hub for music and arts and it’s a sports capital, as well.
Coming in second on the list with a score of 48.75 is Washington, D.C. “Known for its rich history and iconic monuments, D.C. is home to 116 museums and 652 historical places of importance),” wrote the authors of the report. It’s also got great food, with 120 restaurants on the Michelin Guide. And its parks add to the allure, giving it the third best Green City Index Score (68.2/100).
Next up is Los Angeles, which wins for entertainment plus innovation plus an unmatched lifestyle that you can read about all over social media. Rounding out the list of top five are San Francisco (noted for its tech innovation and historical landmarks) and Portland, Oregon (known for its relaxed vibe and commitment to green initiatives).
Read on for the list of the 25 coolest cities in the U.S. and Canada. You can get more details on the methodology and see the city scores across all the categories in the original report.
