When the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, it casts a shadow on the Earth’s surface, resulting in the partial or total coverage of the Sun’s light in specific areas. Such occurrences are infrequent due to the Moon’s orbit not perfectly aligning with that of the Sun and Earth. These moments of alignment are termed eclipse seasons, happening twice annually.

The United States’ space agency, NASA, has announced that a total solar eclipse is slated to traverse North America on 8 April 8 2024 passing through Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Additionally, this solar phenomenon will be observable from various locations including Western Europe, the Pacific and Atlantic regions, the Arctic, Mexico, North America, Central America, the northern part of South America, Canada, as well as the Northwest region of England and Ireland.
The solar eclipse will not be visible in India. There are reports suggesting a similar solar eclipse was witnessed back in 1971. This upcoming event is anticipated to see the Moon blocking the Sun for an extended period, resulting in the sky darkening for about 7.5 minutes. In areas where the eclipse can be seen, there may be a nocturnal atmosphere during the daytime.

Solar Eclipse 2024: How to watch event
You can watch the live stream on YouTube provided by NASA.
Don’t look directly at the Sun, use solar filters or eclipse glasses.
Ensure you are aware of the appropriate times and use specialised eye protection designed for observing the sun. Directly looking at the sun without proper eye protection is hazardous, except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse when the moon entirely covers the face of the sun.
To safely watch a total solar eclipse, use certified solar viewing glasses, ensuring they meet safety standards. Create a pinhole projector for indirect viewing or employ solar filters on telescopes/binoculars. Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, and prioritise safety during this extraordinary celestial event.
Solar Eclipse 2024: What are the timings of the eclipse?
This will start at around 9:12 pm IST on April 8 and will end at 1:25 am at midnight. While it will be nighttime in India, the effect of this eclipse will be visible for several hours in different areas of America, Mexico, and Canada.
