Washington DC: Former US President Donald Trump doubled down on his controversial proposal that Canada should merge with the United States following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation announcement on Monday.

Trump took to social media to advocate for a merger between the US and Canada, arguing that it would eliminate tariffs, reduce taxes, and enhance security. "If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them," Trump posted. "Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!" he added, reinforcing his stance.

Trudeau’s resignation comes amid escalating tensions with India and internal controversies. Key issues include the Nijjar case and the Student Parent Program, which have raised significant concerns in Canada.

Trudeau’s departure follows a controversial period in which Canada’s government clarified allegations linking top Indian officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key ministers, to criminal activities on Canadian soil. A statement from Nathalie G. Drouin, Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council, asserted there was no concrete evidence to support these claims.

Diplomatic strain with India

The diplomatic crisis worsened after Trudeau accused India of covert operations in Canada, particularly following the June 2023 killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau alleged that Indian agents were involved in the murder, a claim India has strongly denied.

Further complicating matters, Canadian officials, including Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Morrison, reportedly implicated India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah in targeting pro-Khalistan activists in Canada.
