The rivalry between Team USA and Team Canada is a tale as old as time, with the hockey superpowers returning to the ice this week in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game.
It was a fiery showdown Saturday when the United States downed Canada 3-1 in the blood-bath-on-ice spectacle, with fans in Montreal’s Bell Centre booing the U.S. national anthem and no less than three fights taking place — two before nine seconds ticked away.
Team USA may have dropped to Sweden 2-1 on Monday night —and lost a key player to injury — but the USA-Canada final had already been determined when Canada bested Finland earlier in the day.
Now, the two rivals will meet again for a must-see rematch for the 4 Nations Face-Off title, which will this time take place in America.
Find out more about the big game, when it’ll take place and how to watch.
What is the 4 Nations?
The 4 Nations Face-Off replaced the NHL All-Star Game this season, bringing a much more competitive edge to midseason play.
The tournament featured four teams composed of NHL players representing their home countries — United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. Each team faced the others once, with the two best teams advancing to the championship game on Thursday.
Unlike traditional all-star games, the 4 Nations Face Off has delivered highly competitive hockey, closely resembling NHL regular-season matchups rather than a friendly exhibition. There have been fights, injuries, overtime play and intense play.

Will the Tkachuk brothers, Auston Matthews play in 4 Nations final?
Team USA could be without some key players in Thursday’s final rematch. Forwards Auston Matthews, USA’s team captain, was a late scratch and Matthew Tkachuk missed Monday’s game against Sweden due to a lower body injury. Brady Tkachuk wasn’t able to finish the game after he lost his balance in the first period and slid hard into a post, according to USA TODAY.
All three are expected to return and play in Thursday’s final, head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters Tuesday.
Will Quinn Hughes play in 4 Nations final?
Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes joined Team USA on Thursday since defenseman Charlie McAvoy was injured; he’s out of the lineup for Thursday’s final game.
The Boston Bruins confirmed McAvoy would not play Thursday, stating in a post on X Tuesday that he was undergoing tests at Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday for an upper-body injury.
Per tournament rules, Hughes will only be eligible to play Thursday if another player is injured and the team drops below six playable defensemen.
