Canada is America’s favourite foreign country, according to a new poll.
Ipsos’s new survey found that 87 per cent of Americans have a positive view of their neighbour to the north.
Just 13 per cent have an unfavourable opinion.
Next most-liked list for Americans was the UK, towards which 84 per cent have a positive view. Just 16 per cent said they looked unfavourably upon the old mother country.
Japan, Germany, Ukraine and Mexico came next in the list, while China (72 per cent unfavourable) and Russia (81 per cent unfavourable) were relegated to the bottom.
While Canada topped the list for most-liked country, it was the island nation across the ocean that came first in the realm of alliances. The Brits were deemed the US’s strongest ally by 53 per cent of those polled, considerably ahead of Canada (29 cent).
China was deemed America’s most important economic partner (38 per cent), meanwhile, with Canada (27 per cent) and the UK (21 per cent) next in line.
Ipsos said its study was conducted between Oct. 17 and 18, based on a sample of 1,004 adults in the US.
The poll comes at an interesting point in Canada–US relations, with an election next month set to decide the next occupant of the White House.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this month “we’re ready” for the 2026 renegotiation of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, which succeeded NAFTA during the Donald Trump presidency.
The majority of Canadians, according to another poll, would prefer Trump’s rival, Kamala Harris, to win the election on Nov. 5.
But the administration of which Harris has been a part for the last four years has also been deemed protectionist vis-a-vis Canada, increasing lumber duties and drawing criticism from Trudeau for its more protectionist economic policies.
