Bermuda has been named the top jurisdiction for technology leadership in Latin America and the Caribbean by the Smart Centres Index [SCI].
A spokesperson said, “Developed by Z/Yen, the SCI evaluates the capabilities of global commercial centres to innovate, develop, and implement advanced technologies across key areas such as Science, Technology, and Fintech. Bermuda’s success not only outpaces strong regional competitors like Mexico City and the Cayman Islands, but also highlights its position as a trusted leader for technology-driven industries.
“This ranking affirms Bermuda’s remarkable success in driving innovation support, creative intensity, and delivery capability — the three core pillars of the SCI framework. Globally, Bermuda ranked 57th, a testament to its competitive standing among much larger markets. It also highlights how Bermuda leverages its advanced digital infrastructure and well-regulated environment to balance opportunity and risk in this rapidly evolving era.”
Kendaree Burgess, Managing Director of the Bermuda Business Development Agency, emphasised the significance of Bermuda’s achievement: “Bermuda’s top-ranking in the Smart Centres Index underscores our commitment to build a resilient and innovative economy. Achieving first place in the Latin America and Caribbean region reflects the dedication of our public and private sectors in establishing Bermuda as a trusted global hub for technology. This accomplishment sets us apart from competing jurisdictions, highlighting not only our ability to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape but also our drive to lead in emerging fields. Moreover, this recognition aligns directly with Bermuda’s broader economic development strategy, reaffirming our commitment to fostering growth, innovation, and sustainability.”
The spokesperson said, “The rankings in the SCI are determined through a comprehensive survey, which gathers input from professionals across various industries, located outside of Bermuda. This data is combined with quantitative measures to provide a holistic view of each centre’s performance in advancing technology and economic development.”
Mike Wardle, Chief Executive Officer of the Z/Yen Group of Companies, stated: “Economic development increasingly depends on the application of new and innovative technologies to a wide range of activity. Places that are able to support innovation through their regulatory and business environment, and through the development of talent will thrive in the economy of the future. Bermuda is showing leadership in the region in the development of innovative industry.”
The spokesperson said, “Z/Yen is a London-based think-tank and consultancy known for its expertise in financial services, technology, and strategic management. Since its establishment in 1994, Z/Yen has developed influential indices such as the Global Financial Centres Index and the Smart Centres Index, which evaluate innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness in key global industries.”
