British piano powerhouses to perform for 3rd annual Piano Festival

The Cayman Arts Festival organisation has announced the return of one of its signature events, the third annual Cayman Piano Festival. The six-event lineup, from 3-12 Oct., will see two renowned British classical pianists headline.

“We would be thrilled to have either Peter Donohoe or Martin Roscoe return to the Cayman Islands to perform, but to have them both appear in the same festival is quite extraordinary,” Cayman Arts Festival Artistic Director Glen Inanga said in a CAF press release, adding, “Both of these pianists are legends in the music world.”

Peter Donohoe

Acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time, Donohoe is renowned for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique. Donohoe has appeared with Dresden Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic and BBC Concert orchestras, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonia, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Belarusian State Symphony Orchestra, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed across the UK and Europe, South America, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Russia, and the USA. He made his 22nd appearance at the BBC Proms in 2012 and has appeared at many other festivals, including six consecutive visits to the Edinburgh Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron international piano festival in France, and at the Ruhr Piano Festival and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany.

“I’m super excited to go to the Cayman Islands,” Donohoe told the Cayman Compass. “It’s my first time there and first time to perform in the Caribbean. Looking forward to seeing a dear friend while there and enjoying the natural beauty. Hope to get the flavour of the island through the people, landscape … and food!”

He added, “I am so privileged to be able to do this by having the opportunity to share a programme of piano music from not only the Western canon, but also music that reflects my own heritage.”

Martin Roscoe

Martin Roscoe’s career spans over five decades, with a repertoire of over 100 concertos performed or recorded. Known for his concerto, recital and chamber performances, Roscoe has worked with many UK orchestras, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

He also performs widely across Europe, Canada, and Australia. He is the artistic director of Ribble Valley International Piano Week and the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society.

Noting his last visit to Cayman in October 2019, Roscoe told the Compass, “It was a very enjoyable visit. The recital I gave was to a full house, and the audience were warmly appreciative and clearly enjoyed the evening as much as I did!”

Roscoe said, “I’m really looking forward to visiting Cayman next month with my old friend and colleague, the legendary Peter Donohoe.”

Over the years, the highly acclaimed pianists have graced many stages performing together, and most recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first collaboration at the Royal Northern College of Music on 16 Sept.

Schedule of events

Music lovers will be treated to a kick-off ‘Rising Stars’ concert on 3 Oct., featuring a showcase by young student musicians in Cayman. Peter Donohoe will perform his own recital on 5 Oct. Both events start at 6pm at the George Town Public Library.

An invitation-only screening will be held on 6 Oct., which will feature the 2023 award-winning documentary ‘Pianoforte’ at Camana Bay Cinema.

“The documentary tells the story of several young pianists who participated in the challenging international Chopin Piano Competition,” the press release noted.

Donohoe and Roscoe will take centre stage at a recital on 9 Oct. at First Baptist Church, starting at 7pm.

The festival will conclude with two more concerts at the George Town Public Library, with American pianist Shirley Yoo on 10 Oct. and Martin Roscoe playing on his own on 12 Oct. Both recitals will begin at 6pm.

Organisers anticipate the recitals will sell out, so music lovers are encouraged to buy tickets early. The press release also noted, the main Cayman Arts Festival will be held in February next year with the return of its popular events, including the monthly staging of Music at the Library, and the popular SoNoRo Festival.
