Duquesne’s season-opening streak without a victory in men’s basketball under first-year coach Dru Joyce III reached five Sunday with a 71-60 loss to South Dakota State in the first of three games in three days for the Dukes at the Cayman Islands Classic in George Town, Grand Cayman.
Oscar Cluff’s double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds powered South Dakota State (5-1), which was picked to finish second behind Kansas City in the nine-team Summit League.
Kalen Garry’s 20 points led four Jackrabbits in double figures.
The game featured a matchup of two teams coming off NCAA Tournament appearances.
Defending Atlantic 10 champion Duquesne (0-5) will play Hampton at 11 a.m. on Monday at John Gray Gymnasium. The Pirates, members of the Coastal Athletic Association, dropped an 83-69 decision to Boise State on Sunday.
Duquesne made just 9 of 38 3-point attempts (23.7%), whereas South Dakota State went 10 for 21 (47.6%).
Tre Dinkins III paced Duquesne with 19 points.
The teams were deadlocked at halftime 33-33 and played a back-and-forth affair to start the second half until South Dakota State used a 13-0 run to take control 62-51 with 5 minutes, 14 seconds left.
The game featured nine ties and 10 lead changes.
Matthew Mors (15 points) and Owen Larson (11) also scored in double figures for South Dakota State, which takes on Boise State on Monday.
Maximus Edwards, despite shooting just 1 of 9 from behind the arc, added 11 points for Duquesne. Jake DiMichele finished with 10.
Joyce, Duquesne’s associate head coach the past two seasons, is in his first year as coach of the Dukes, succeeding Keith Dambrot, who last season led the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 47 years.
