Fans say ‘so this is what it’s come to’ as former superstar spotted struggling now playing in Cayman Islands

DAVID WARNER was once one of the most formidable batsmen in world cricket.

But a recent video showed him being dismissed by an Italian journeyman in the Cayman Islands.

Warner went for a big heaveCredit: X

Australia great Warner, 37, played his final Test against Pakistan in January as he bowed out of international cricket.

And he has decided to take his talents on the road, playing for the Boca Raton Trailblazers in an obscure T10 league called MAX60.

In the clip, Warner attempts to smash Aussie-born Italy bowler Ben Manenti to the boundary.

But he miscues his effort and Manenti takes a smart catch to dismiss him for 12.

Cricket is making inroads in North America but Warner’s current location lacks the grandeur of the MCC or Lord’s.

Ironically, Boca Raton is known as a retirement destination in the US.

Fox Sports commentator Justin Edwards posted the video, adding “this is what cricket has come to.”

Fans did not agree with his take – pointing out the Warner was trying to grow the game and might have fancied playing a bit of cricket while enjoying the Cayman Islands.

One replied: “Isn’t it good for cricket overall? A player like David Werner playing in foreign tournaments after retiring from International Cricket and trying to grow the games those countries as well while earning money. More players should do it.”

Another added: “It’s interesting to see big names like David Warner playing in leagues like the T10 in the Cayman Islands. Cricket continues to evolve with new formats and opportunities for players around the world.”

A third wrote: “Imagine hating on a developing cricketing nation’s attempts to grow the game locally like this.”

A fourth suggested: “Maybe it’s just a holiday to the Cayman Islands with some cricket thrown in and not any deeper than that. Cricket isn’t going to die from this.”

A fifth ventured: “[Cristiano] Ronaldo plays in Saudi Arabia…gotta let the legends play on in some level of international cricket.”

Ahead of the tournament, Warner told fans he was thrilled to be involved.

Can you name the famous fathers?

He said: “Hi, Dave Warner here. Just sharing how excited I am to be a part of the first ever MAX60 Caribbean cricket league.

“It should be an absolute blast playing in such a breathtaking location at Grand Cayman.

“It’s going to be absolutely incredible. So join us, MAX60 Caribbean league starting August 16 in the Caymans. See you there.”

Boca Raton are currently second in the standings as they look to make the final on Sunday.
