US airline United Airlines is set to increase its capacity to the Cayman Islands this winter, aiming to bring in more air passengers and boost tourist activity on the island.
According to a report in the Caribbean Journal, United is adding more flights from the US into Grand Cayman from Chicago, Houston and Washington, DC for the peak winter season and beyond.
This will include a new daily service beginning in mid-December between Chicago O’Hare and Owen Roberts International Airport.
United is also increasing capacity on its service between Houston, Texas and Grand Cayman from a once-a-week service to a daily service starting in November and December. This route will become a permanent daily route from next March.
From the US capital, Washington DC, United is increasing its flights to Grand Cayman to a total of four times every week, with a flight on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The news was welcomed by Cayman Islands Director of Tourism Rosa Harris.
“Increasing airlift to the destination is crucial to the continued development of the Cayman Islands tourism industry,” she said.
“United’s increase in nonstop flights into Grand Cayman is a testament to the reputation of the Cayman Islands as a premier destination for US travellers. We value our partnership with United and the confidence they have in the destination.”
Air arrivals on the rise
There were 289,095 air arrivals into the Cayman Islands from January to July this year, up from 279,850 in the same period the previous year.
In total in 2023, there were 429,284 visitors by air, the third-highest number on record, with more than four-fifths coming from the US. Visitors from Canada and Europe made up much of the rest of the international traffic.
Other airlines that fly between the Cayman Islands and the US include American Airlines, Cayman Airways, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways and Southwest.
While the US is by far the largest air traffic market for the Cayman Islands, the tourism board is keen to boost air arrivals from other parts of the world, including Latin American and Europe, to bring new visitors to the island and not rely so heavily on the North American sector.
Earlier this year, Tourism Director Harris led a delegation to Brazil and Colombia as part of Cayman’s long-term plan to boost tourist numbers from Latin America and make the islands a year-round destination for tourists.
