A Brazilian judge on Saturday night directed local law enforcement to take immediate action against an Israeli soldier who is currently vacationing in Brazil. The order follows an urgent request by the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), which accused the Israeli visitor of war crimes.
The Israeli soldier, Saar Hirshoren, is a survivor of the Nova music festival massacre near Kibbutz Re’im on October 7, 2023, in which Hamas executed 364 individuals, mostly civilians. In a video interview that went viral two weeks after the massacre, the soldier recounted his hours-long escape from the murderers’ gunfire, running many kilometers until he reached safety.

In its petition, the HRF urged the Brazilian authorities to swiftly detain the soldier, citing concerns over potential flight risk and the possible destruction of critical evidence. The court responded by mandating immediate measures to address these concerns, underscoring the gravity of the allegations.
Named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Arab girl who was killed during the IDF invasion of the Gaza Strip following the Hamas October 7 massacre, HRF is “seeking to hold perpetrators accountable and ensuring that the stories of the victims are never lost to history.”
The soldier’s family issued a statement saying: “He is not under arrest, right now we are interested in him coming to Israel, whoever needs to help him is helping him.” Indeed, despite the order issued by the Brazilian judge, it appears that Saar Hirshoren is not in Brazil.
According to the group Comunidad Palestina de Chile (Palestinian Community of Chile), Hirshoren, who serves in the IDF’s 749th Combat Engineering Battalion, was detected in southern Chile. In response, the Hind Rajab Foundation took immediate steps to arrange for his arrest.
The criminal complaint stresses that “the application of the principle of extraterritorial justice allows national courts to intervene in cases where the perpetrator of the crimes is located within Chilean territory, or there are jurisdictional links that enable criminal action, reaffirming the State’s obligation to pursue and punish the most atrocious international crimes.”
According to the HRF statement, “the evidence against Hirshoren includes videos from his own Instagram account showing him actively participating in the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza, with deliberate demolitions of neighborhoods, cultural sites, and essential facilities, in violation of the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute.”
HRF began its complaint in Argentina after the soldier was found in Patagonia. After leaving Argentina, Hirshoren traveled to Chile, prompting the HRF to file a second criminal complaint with prosecutors in Santiago and Aysén.
“The Hind Rajab Foundation demands the immediate arrest of Saar Hirshoren by the authorities of Argentina and Chile, emphasizing the urgency of preventing him from evading justice. At the same time, the Foundation calls on the ICC to expedite its investigation into the 749th Combat Engineering Battalion and issue arrest warrants for its members. These actions are necessary to uphold international law and hold the perpetrators accountable for their crimes in Gaza.”
The HRF stated: “These acts are part of a broader effort to impose unbearable living conditions on Palestinian civilians, constituting genocide and crimes against humanity under international law. The evidence presented includes video footage, geolocation data, and photographs showing the suspect personally planting explosives and participating in the destruction of entire neighborhoods. These materials prove beyond doubt the suspect’s direct involvement in these heinous acts.”
