June 25, 2024 8:50 PM ETPlayer Statements – ChilePaulo Díaz, defender of the “Roja”, refused to be satisfied with the draw and how special it is to face old teammates in Argentina: “I do not sign a draw. We want to go out to win and we hope that the result will be favorable. For me, it is special to play against Argentina because I had teammates like Julian Alvarez, Franco Armani or Exequiel Palacios. It is always a great showcase, playing against the last world champion”.
He also referred to the meaning of replacing an emblematic player like Gary Medel: “He has been an important part of the national team, he won two Copa América, but we will continue to do it in the best way. The national team player has to be prepared to play with whoever he plays with, for me it is indistinct”.
June 25, 2024 8:45 PM ETPlayer Statements – ArgentinaNahuel Molina, defender of the “Albiceleste”, praised the offensive power of Chile: “Chile has good attackers, I think we will have to be well positioned so that they do not complicate us, and try to play our game. We will try to attack and have the ball, as we always do”.
He also talked about the keys to get along with Lionel Messi on the field: “The important thing is to give Messi options when he has the ball. Knowing how to look for spaces. To understand when to go outside or inside”.

June 25, 2024 8:27 PM ETCoach’s Statement – ChileRicardo Gareca anticipated what kind of match he expects against Argentina: “I imagine a match in which Argentina takes the initiative and Chile as well. I see an aggressive Argentina, as we are used to. We have to try to find our way of playing beyond the opponent’s strategy”.
In addition, he also criticized the state of the playing fields: “Beyond the good intentions, the fields have not been the best. They are dry, small fields, with unevenness. They have stages for other issues and it is difficult to adapt them to soccer”.

June 25, 2024 7:52 PM ETTop Player – Chile
Claudio Bravo, the captain and one of the few remaining members of the “Golden Generation”, became the oldest player to play in the Copa América. At the age of 41 years and 69 days, he has played 26 matches in three editions, conceding 30 goals and keeping a clean sheet on ten occasions. In addition, he had the luxury of being twice champion after defeating, by penalties, the Argentine National Team in 2015 and 2016. With the “Roja” he has, in total, 149 appearances in which he scored 172 goals and kept an unbeaten goal on 58 occasions. His last season in Real Betis of Spain was not good at all, as he suffered several injuries that left him sidelined and, when he recovered, he used to go to the substitutes’ bench. In the 23/24 campaign he only played nine matches, conceded seven goals and kept a clean sheet in two.
June 25, 2024 7:47 PM ETTop Player – Argentina
Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez, one of the pillars of the “Albiceleste”, arrives in a great personal moment to this Copa América after a very good season with Aston Villa of England and after overcoming a minor injury. In the 23/24 season with the Premier League team, he played 47 matches distributed among local leagues, domestic cups and Conference League. In those matches he conceded 61 goals and kept a clean sheet on 15 occasions. However, his numbers with the Argentina jersey are really surprising. In 40 appearances since his debut in 2021, “Dibu” conceded just 16 goals and kept a clean sheet on 29 occasions. In his first Copa América, in which he was crowned champion, it was in 2021. Of the seven matches played by the team coached by Lionel Scaloni, he saved in six. In those matches he conceded only two goals and, in the penalty shootout against Colombia, he saved three of the five.
June 25, 2024 7:42 PM ETArgentina’s thrashing in the pastThese two countries met 90 times, 58 of which were victories for the “Albiceleste”, 26 times it ended in a draw and only six times it was Chile that won. The last time they met was in January 2022 in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, when Argentina won 2-1.
Chile 1-2 Argentina, CONMEBOL Playoffs
Argentina 1-1 Chile, Copa América
Argentina 1-1 Chile, CONMEBOL Qualifiers
Argentina 0-0 Chile, International Friendly
Argentina 2-1 Chile, Copa America
June 25, 2024 7:37 PM ETChile’s presentThe “Roja” is not going through the best of times, that golden generation that came out as two-time champion of America is taking its last steps and the arrival of Ricardo Gareca as coach seeks, as part of the project, a restructuring. Little by little, the idea of “Tigre” is taking hold in the team and the results, although not all of them are good, are backed by a better performance than before. They are coming to this second matchday after a goalless draw against Peru in a match that was dull due to the low individual levels and unattractive due to the lack of goal situations. However, and despite the lack of goals against the “Blanquirroja”, this Chile has a different offensive power. In the last four matches, they scored eight goals distributed among five players, among which Víctor Dávila with three and Eduardo Vargas with two stand out.
June 25, 2024 7:32 PM ETThis is how Argentina arrives to the matchTo this debut, the “Albiceleste” arrives as the favorite not only to win the match, but also the group and even the Copa América. After winning the World Cup in 2022, the team coached by Lionel Scaloni did not drop their performance, they had a small change of players, but they kept the essence and the main idea of the coach. Since the defeat against Saudi Arabia in the first match of Qatar 2022, Argentina won 18 matches, drew two and only lost to Uruguay in the CONMEBOL qualifiers. This match comes after the victory against Canada in the opening match of this Copa América with goals by Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. Although Argentina showed a notorious superiority, the “Rouges” had stretches of the match where they hit hard, but could not hurt.
June 25, 2024 7:27 PM ETThe stadium for the match
The venue for the match between Argentina and Chile will be MetLife Stadium, also known as Giants Stadium, a multi-purpose stadium located in the suburb of East Rutherford, south of Bergen County, in the state of New Jersey, United States. It was primarily used as a soccer stadium. It has a total capacity of up to 82,500 spectators. Previously, the artificial turf was being replaced by natural grass and, for that reason, it was strongly criticized by the protagonists as it was in very poor condition for the match. The construction was carried out in 2007.
