On July 28, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Teodoro Ribera of Chile in Santiago.
Wang Yi expressed, Chile is a successful model of emerging markets, a staunch defender of free trade and a leader in the process of regional integration. China-Chile relations have long been at the forefront of China-Latin America relations. In recent years, thanks to the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Sebastian Pinera, cooperation between the two countries has been comprehensively upgraded, with new and constant achievements. In the next stage, the two sides need to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, well implement the 2019-2022 Joint Action Plan between the Chinese and Chilean Governments, and take the upgrading of the China-Chile Free Trade Agreement as an opportunity to elevate the economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries to a new level.
Wang Yi noted, the Chinese side appreciates Chile’s active participation in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, and is willing to align development strategies with the Chilean side and deepen practical cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to actively participate in the promotion of major connectivity projects such as trans-Pacific fiber optic cable, and enhance cooperation with the Chilean side in high-tech fields including 5G network construction and artificial intelligence. The Chinese side stands ready to encourage Chinese high-tech enterprises to invest and establish business in Chile, and hopes that the Chilean side will provide a sound business environment for Chinese enterprises. The Chilean side is welcome to participate in the second China International Import Expo. The two sides should also intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges and consolidate the public support for the friendship between the two countries.
Wang Yi noted, the Chinese side supports Chile for hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in the coming November and to send out clear message of supporting free trade and opposing protectionism. The Chinese side supports Chile for hosting the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference to promote the process of international cooperation in climate change. China supports Chile in playing a greater role in the process of regional integration in Latin America, actively participating in the overall cooperation between China and Latin America and pushing such cooperation for in-depth and substantial development.
Teodoro Ribera said, Chile-China relations have always maintained sound development for the past 50 some years since the establishment of diplomatic relationship. President Sebastian Pinera paid a successful visit to China in April this year, and made a new plan for the relations between the two countries with President Xi Jinping. The Chilean side stands ready to, together with the Chinese side, making celebration plans in a meticulous manner for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries, to showcase the two countries’ determination to the commitment of fostering a closer partnership in the next 50 years. Attaching great importance to and comprehensively participating in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chilean side deepens bilateral cooperation covering a wide range of fields including science and technology and drives the overall cooperation between China and Latin America. The Chilean side eagerly looks forward to President Xi Jinping’s attendance at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting which will be held in Chile in November. It is believed that President Xi Jinping’s attendance will help the meeting send out positive signal of supporting free trade and safeguarding multilateral trading system. The Chilean side thanks the Chinese side for supporting Chile in holding the UN Climate Change Conference in December, and believes that the Chinese side will play an important role in pushing for a success of the conference.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interest. After the talks, they jointly met the press.
