Claro to Put $200M into Colombia for AI-Ready Networks

Mexican telco Claro is set to invest over US$200 million in Colombia to strengthen its fiber optic network, paving the way for widespread adoption of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.

This investment will enhance connectivity for over 1.5 million homes and foster a stronger technological ecosystem throughout the country.

Rodrigo de Gusmao, president of Claro Colombia, stated that the new investment would lay the groundwork for enhanced AI capabilities. He added that AI could boost Colombia’s GDP by up to 10% over the next 15 years.

The upgraded infrastructure will accelerate Internet access, facilitating the deployment of AI-driven solutions across various sectors, including telemedicine and industrial automation.

Claro’s investment extends beyond urban areas, with a strong focus on improving connectivity in rural and underserved regions. The company emphasized its commitment to making AI accessible to all Colombians, regardless of their location.

As a subsidiary of América Móvil, Claro has been actively expanding its operations in Colombia. In 2023 alone, the company invested US$1 billion in the country. In July, Claro partnered with Nokia to launch the first phase of its 5G network.

The carrier has a network of more than 10,000 cell towers across the Andean country, and its 5G service is available in six cities.

According to Colombia’s Ministry of ICT, Claro currently holds a 28.7% share of the fixed Internet market, followed by Tigo (26.5%), Movistar (18.4%), and ETB (9.4%).
