Colombia have had an excellent couple of years and topping Group D, ahead of Brazil, was a continuation of their overall improvement. They now take on a Panamanian side that have been the surprise of the tournament in reaching the quarter-finals.

COLOMBIA PREVIEW: POTENTIAL WINNERS

The Colombian national side are unbeaten since early February 2022, in what was an unofficial friendly anyway against Argentina, and are heading into the last eight as one of the genuine leading contenders for the Copa America title.

They started their group stage campaign with an impressive performance to defeat Paraguay before two goals to one before then hammering Costa Rica 3-0. A 1-1 draw with Brazil in their final group game means they topped Group D.

PANAMA PREVIEW: HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE

Panama were drawn into what seemed a tough group on paper with hosts the United States as well as in-form and improving Uruguay. It seemed like it would be an uphill battle, too, when they lost their opener 3-1 to the Uruguayans.

When Timothy Weah was sent off but the USMNT still took the lead against them in their second game, the jig seemed up. However, they came from behind to win 2-1 and then a defeat of Bolivia in their final game means they head into the quarter-finals, causing a major upset.

COLOMBIA TEAM NEWS: REPLACING JEFFERSON LERMA

The key concern for Colombia comes in defensive midfield with Crystal Palace man Jefferson Lerma picking up his second yellow card and now meaning he will miss the game with Panama. Mateus Uribe is expected to replace him alongside Richard Rios and Jhon Arias.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Camilo Vargas; Daniel Munoz, Davinson Sanchez, Carlos Cuesta, Deiver Machado; Richard Rios, Mateus Uribe, Jhon Arias; James Rodriguez, Jhon Cordoba, Luis Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Jefferson Lerma (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Jhon Lucumi (Injured)

PANAMA TEAM NEWS: ADALBERTO CARRASQUILLA STILL OUT

Panama lost captain Anibal Godoy on the eve of the tournament and now vice-captain Adalberto Carrasquilla is serving the second of a two-match suspension for a red card against the USA. Cristian Martinez should be partnered, once again, with Jovani Welch in midfield.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Mosquera; Michael Murillo, Edgardo Farina, Jose Cordoba, Carlos Harvey, Eric Davis; Cesar Blackman, Cristian Martinez, Jovani Welch, Edgar Barcenas; Jose Fajardo

UNAVAILABLE: Adalberto Carrasquilla (Suspended)

COLOMBIA VS PANAMA PREDICTION

Colombia have been magnificent in this tournament and will believe they have what it takes to go all the way, albeit their planned semi-final will be against either Brazil or Uruguay. Panama came through a tough group and that in itself is a historic achievement for the Central Americans but conceding against Bolivia is not necessarily a good sign as they come up against one of the in-form teams anywhere in international football.
