Italian Fugitive Luigi Belvedere Captured in Colombia

Missing since December 2020, the police have captured fugitive Luigi Belvedere in Colombia: he was betrayed by a messaging app on his phone. For months, law enforcement’s attention had been focused on South America and particularly Colombia, where Luigi Belvedere, 32, originally from San Clemente di Caserta and associated with the Casalesi clan, had fled.

Considered a powerful drug trafficker opposed to the Belforte clan, he was on the list of the most dangerous fugitives of the Camorra and had evaded capture in 2020. In the meantime, he had been definitively sentenced to just under 10 years in prison for international drug trafficking. Belvedere was captured at night in Medellin: he was listed among the dangerous fugitives by the Ministry of the Interior. He had become known in recent years for opening two pizzerias in Cartagena.

The investigation, coordinated by the Naples District Attorney’s Office and conducted by the Mobile Squad of the Caserta Police Headquarters, the Sisco of Naples and the Sco, with the direct collaboration of Colombian investigative bodies and the operational support of Europol, the Dcsa and the International Police Cooperation Service, documented the operations of Belvedere, a broker from Caserta specialized in cocaine importation, who acted as an intermediary between Colombian cartels and some clans of the “Camorra cartel” of the Casalesi.

In particular, his capture – which also saw the direct participation of State Police investigators on a mission in Colombian territory – was achieved through complex investigations, which, also using information extracted from a messaging system in collaboration with Europol, confirmed his presence in Colombia where he was active in organizing drug shipments from South America to Europe.

“The capture of the dangerous drug trafficker Luigi Belvedere is a great victory for the State and a severe blow to organized crime and its drug trafficking. A fugitive since 2020, with a significant criminal record, Belvedere was one of the organizational minds of the Camorra’s drug trafficking. His capture is the result of intense international investigative and judicial cooperation by the Naples Prosecutor’s Office, sealed by a recent trip by Nicola Gratteri to Colombia. To Gratteri, his collaborators in the Prosecutor’s Office, and the men and women of the State Police who participated in this very important operation, I extend my heartfelt congratulations, aware of the valuable service rendered to Italy and the citizens of Campania in the relentless fight against organized crime and drugs. We will never give respite to the mafia serpent!” stated in a note Andrea Delmastro delle Vedove, deputy of Brothers of Italy and Undersecretary of State for Justice.
