How to investigate oceans without dying in the process
Oceans are in crisis—making the need for accurate, powerful storytelling more urgent than ever.
As the ecosystems most affected by climate change, oceans face increasing threats: they receive about 8 million tons of plastic waste every year, a third of marine mammal species are threatened, and 8 million tons of marine resources are illegally fished every year. Amid these pressures, companies from different industries profit by breaking the law or invading marine protected areas, mafias extract threatened species that end up being sold as delicacies in Asia or those who try to oversee good practices disappear.
Join a special workshop led by a journalist, Mongabay Latam Senior Contributing Editor for Oceans Michelle Carrere, and a scientist, Global Fishing Watch Data Analyst Bjorn Bergman, who will explain and make recommendations on the priority issues when discussing oceans, the most noteworthy scientific sources and how to access official information. From databases to satellite maps, this workshop will present the tools for exploring oceans where the tools are just the tip of the iceberg for telling new stories.

Journalism on stage: Indigenous peoples displaced by palm oil
Experience the power of investigative journalism with Mongabay Latam and Rutas del Conflicto in a live, journalistic performance showcasing an investigation into the environmental impact of a controversial palm oil project in the department of Vichada, Colombia.
This unique storytelling format will reveal key findings from an in-depth investigation into how the ancestral lands of the Indigenous Sikuani community were targeted by a palm oil initiative spearheaded by a former congressman and relative of a prominent Colombian businessman. Today, the Sikuani people are fighting to reclaim their rightful land through the Colombian authorities.
