A pair of Petaluma brothers continue to make waves in weightlifting for Team USA, after both brought home medals from an international competition this past November.
William and Nathan Prokop, both graduates of Petaluma High School, represented Team USA at the 2024 FISU America Games in Cali, Colombia, competing among a select group of 20 weightlifting student-athletes from across the Pan American region.
William Prokop, an undergraduate majoring in sports science at East Tennessee State University, got the gold medal in the men’s 89 kg weightlifting category. He lifted 125 kilograms in the snatch event and 156 kilograms in the clean and jerk event, securing a 281-kilogram total.
“I’m incredibly proud to represent Team USA and ETSU on the international stage and bring home a gold medal for my team, my school and for Petaluma,” William told the Argus-Courier in an email.
Nathan Prokop, now a graduate student in sports business management at East Tennessee State University, earned the bronze medal in the men’s 96 kg weightlifting class at the Colombia games. Nathan lifted 125 kilograms in the snatch and 170 kilograms in the clean and jerk, for a total of 295 kilograms.
The victories are the latest in a string of achievements in 2024 and beyond, including, for William, podium finishes at both the National University Championships for USA Weightlifting and the Under-23/25 National Championships, as well as All-American honors. Nathan also had a podium finish at the National University Championships and scored an All-American title. He previously won numerous national championships and earned the title of Collegiate All American while representing Menlo College in 2020.
The FISU America Games, organized by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire, is a multi-sport, Olympic-style competition featuring some of the top university athletes from North and South America.
At the games, which ran from Nov. 5 to 14, Team USA earned 18 total medals, which included 10 gold, five silver, and three bronze.
Team USA finished in fourth place overall at the competition, behind Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.
