Charlotte: Uruguay will face Colombia in the Copa America semi-final without central defender Ronald Araujo, confirmed coach Marcelo Bielsa on Tuesday. Araujo sustained a muscular injury to his right thigh during Uruguay’s victory over Brazil in Las Vegas on Saturday, as reported by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF).

“We won’t have Araujo available,” Bielsa announced at a press conference held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez replaced Araujo in the 33rd minute against Brazil and is expected to start against Colombia.

Additionally, Uruguay will miss right-back Nahitan Nandez, who received a red card in the second half of the intense match against Brazil. Bielsa expressed uncertainty about Nandez’s replacement, considering Guillermo Varela and winger Agustin Canobbio as primary options.

Bielsa acknowledged Colombia’s impressive form under coach Nestor Lorenzo, highlighting their unbeaten streak of 27 matches.

“They are a tough opponent, with recent positive results… Brazil was very demanding, and we see Colombia similarly,” Bielsa noted.

He praised Colombia’s team cohesion and individual talent, emphasising their distinct playing style.

In response to Uruguay’s defensive injuries, Colombia’s coach Lorenzo downplayed its impact on the upcoming game.

“I don’t see it as a decisive advantage. They have quality players who can step in. We’ve faced similar situations,” Lorenzo remarked, referring to Jhon Lucumi’s recovery and potential role in the match.

Lorenzo welcomed midfielder Jefferson Lerma back from suspension, ensuring a full squad for the semi-final clash.

Colombia secured their semi-final berth with a commanding 5-0 victory over Panama, matching their unbeaten record set between 1992 and 1994.

“I don’t dwell on the unbeaten streak. Each game is taken as it comes,” Lorenzo commented.

The Copa America final will take place in Miami on Sunday, showcasing South America’s top football talent in a climactic showdown. AFP
