Brazil have an illustrious history in the Copa America, winning the title nine times and finishing as runners-up in the last edition. They are second-favourites for the trophy, just behind Argentina, priced at 3.25 to win on the outright markets.
Costa Rica are competing in their fifth Copa America championship, having reached the quarter-finals on two occasions. Despite being in a tough group with Brazil, Colombia and an always difficult-to-beat Paraguay, they’ll be hoping for a repeat of their 2014 World Cup heroics, where they managed to top a group of death with Uruguay, Italy and England to secure passage into the knockout rounds.
Brazil v Costa Rica Best Bets
➡️ Costa Rica (+2.5) Asian Handicap @ 2.05 on bet365
Brazil are very heavy favourites for the game, with the odds for them to win standing at a paltry 1.11. Although they are justified as strong favourites, these odds are far too short for a team that still has question marks and against a Costa Rican side that has proven it can trouble the big sides in recent games and keep things competitive.
In the last 18 games, Brazil have beaten a team by more than a two-goal margin just twice and have kept a clean sheet just four times in that stretch of games. Even with a change of manager and change of direction, they aren’t a side that blows teams away. Our pick would be Costa Rica +2.5 Asian Handicap with bet365. Any result other than Brazil winning by a three-goal or greater margin will see this bet land.
Costa Rica manager, Gustavo Alfaro is confident ahead of the game. He stated in a press conference that the hierarchy of Brazil is ‘respected, but not feared’ and that Costa Rica will not be intimidated by the challenge of facing this Brazilian side.
📊 Brazil Form and Stats
In late 2023, Brazil were on a horrendous run of form in CONMEBOL qualifying, drawing at home to Venezuela before 3 back to back defeats, culminating in their first-ever home defeat in World Cup qualifying at the hands of bitter rivals, Argentina.
Their interim coach, Fernando Diniz was fired in January and Dorival Junior has come in to replace him. Since then, Brazil have been unbeaten, pulling off an impressive 1-0 victory over England in a March friendly before being a little fortunate to draw 3-3 with Spain in the following game.
The warm-up friendlies included a 3-2 win against a poor Mexico side and a 1-1 draw against the USA. Given all these have been games away from home, it’s a respectable set of results that shows Brazil are still a difficult team to beat and are in better shape than they were last year.
📊 Costa Rica Form and Stats
Costa Rica have scored seven goals across their two warm-up games without reply. However, Grenada and Saint Kitts & Nevis are hardly a barometer of what they will be up against versus Brazil. Their two preceding games give more of an indication.
At the beginning of June, they drew 0-0 with Uruguay and were unfortunate not to win the game, with a missed penalty and winning the xG battle. In March, they opened the scoring against Argentina before succumbing to a 3-1 defeat.
They’ve shown an ability to create chances and score against some of South America’s best, so Brazil will certainly have to be on their guard against potential Costa Rican counter-attacks.
⚔️ Brazil v Costa Rica Head-to-Head
The two sides have met on 10 occasions, with Brazil victorious in nine of those. Costa Rica’s only win came in a 1960 Panamerican Championship game where they defeated the Selecao 3-0.
Their most recent game was in the 2018 World Cup where Brazil were 2-0 winners. In those 10 games, Brazil scored 37 goals and Costa Rica just nine.
