NWSL champion Gotham FC opened play in the new Concacaf W Champions Cup with a 4-0 win at Costa Rica’s Alajuelense
Spanish World Cup champion Esther Gonzalez opened the scoring in the third minute, and Katie Stengel (penalty kick), Jenna Nighswonger (free kick) and Delanie Sheehan followed with goals.
Gotham FC, which lost Yasmin Ryan to a red card in the 73rd minute, joined the NWSL’s two other entrants, the San Diego Wave (2-0 at Panama’s Santa Fe) and Portland Thorns (3-1 over Mexico’s Club America), in winning their opening games.
