Costa Rica on Monday said it will accept migrants who have been deported from the United States.
“The government of Costa Rica agreed to collaborate with the United States in the repatriation of 200 illegal immigrants to their country,” the Costa Rican president’s office said in a statement, adding that “these are people originating from… Central Asia and India.”
The migrants will be flown to Costa Rica on a commercial flight, scheduled for Wednesday, and then taken to a temporary migrant care centre located near the border with Panama.
This decision marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between the US and Central American nations in handling migrant deportations. Costa Rica is the third country in the region to participate, following Panama and Guatemala.
The repatriation process will be fully funded by the US government and will be supervised by the International organisation for migration (IOM), which ensures that the deportation and care of migrants are handled in a manner that respects international standards.
Earlier this month, Panama received its first flight of deported migrants, which included individuals from countries such as China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Guatemala has yet to receive its first batch, although the arrangement remains in place.
The US administration, under President Trump, has been firm in its stance against illegal immigration. Trump’s administration has vowed to deport millions of undocumented migrants, including many from Latin America, as part of its broader efforts to curb illegal immigration and secure the US southern border.
